Understanding the Where, When and Why of Forest Mortality in Central Chile

I am an IAPETUS PhD student from Chile based at Biological and Environmental Sciences. I study the causes and consequences of drought-induced forest mortality in central Chile by combining techniques that include, remote sensing, in-situ forest structure measurements, and ecological modelling. My project one of the first to address this issue in this region, and aims to give relevant insights on community composition and range shifts changes along different environmental gradients.

Background

After graduating as an Renewable Natural Resources Engineer from Universidad de Chile with highest honors, I worked in several glaciology and forest ecology project as remote sensing speciallist at Universidad de Ays¨¦n, Universidad Mayor, and Universidad de O'Higgins, where I also took part as guest and main lecturer in related fields between 2020 and 2024.

Before starting my PhD I worked as a Research Assistant at the Laboratorio de Dendroecolog¨ªa y Adaptaci¨®n al Cambio Global - at Universidad de O'Higgins. There, with my current co-supervisor Dr. Alejandro Venegas-Gonz¨¢lez, started studying the effects of persistent and extreme droughts on native forest in central Chile.
